BIRDING ADVENTURES TV NEWS

Greetings!

Well, after a long hiatus from newsletters and admin, its back to work for BATV! The crew has just returned from an extensive Australia trip where we filmed a 3-part series on Australian birds. Our journeys took us to Kangaroo Island in South Australia where we searched for our Golden Bird, the endemic sub-species of Glossy Black Cockatoo.

We then headed north to Alice Springs in Northern Territory and had incredible views of our Golden Bird, the Western Bowerbird. After taking in the magnificence of Uluru (Ayer's Rock) we made our way further north to the "Top End" where we began our quest for the beautiful but elusive Rainbow Pitta. What spectacular birding destinations! Northern Territory and South Australia have so much to offer birders so watch out for our Australia shows when they air soon.

On Saturday evening I was privileged to be the keynote speaker at the Big O birding festival in Clewiston, Florida. It is really heartening to see the steps that are being taken by local activists to promote birding in their respective regions. These local birding festivals are really such an important part of birding in the USA and they really need as much support as possible.

Remember, if you haven't already done so, join our Facebook page where you will get sneak previews of shows, updates on our travels and much more!

Sunbittern

The beautiful and scarce Sunbittern is often seen at Selva Verde

Additionally, Selva Verde can easily be used as a base of exploration for a 3-5 day experience for birders who wish to bird independently.  As a part of the new Costa Rica Bird Route in the region, sites offering different microclimates and habitats can be visited easily each day such as La Selva Biological Station or La Virgen del Socorro.  With excellent naturalists at the Lodge and private transportation, it is very convenient to use Selva Verde as a base to explore the wonders of Sarapiquí.

RED-FOOTED BOOBIES!

The Red-footed Booby, Sula sula, is a large seabird of the gannet family, Sulidae. They are powerful and agile fliers, but they are clumsy in takeoffs and landings. The Red-footed Booby is the smallest of all boobies at 71 cm in length and with a 137 cm wingspan. It has red legs, and its bill and throat pouch are coloured pink and blue. This species has two plumage forms. The white phase is mostly white with black on the flight feathers. The brown form is brown with a white belly, rump, and tail.

This species breeds on islands in most tropical oceans. It winters at sea, and is therefore rarely seen away from breeding colonies.

Catch the quest for this beautiful species this week on BATV!
