PIPING PLOVER
THE FLORIDA KEYS WITH WINGS
BIRDING ADVENTURES TV NEWS
Greetings,
South Florida is a must-visit destination for any birder. Ever since John James Audubon visited the peninsula in the early 1800's, the state has become a legendary birding site.
Earlier this year we explored the West Coast of Florida and traveled to such well-known birding locations as Ding Darling, Corkscrew Swamp and the beautiful Estero Lagoon. One would struggle to find a better spot than the Estero Lagoon to practice one's plover ID skills. In winter at least half a dozen species are present on the beaches and in the lagoon itself.
Stay tuned for another Birding Adventure!

THE PIPING PLOVER!
The Piping Plover (Charadrius melodus) is a small threatened shorebird that lives along the coastal sand and gravel beaches of North America. The adult has yellow-orange legs, a black band across the forehead, and a black ring around the chest.
There are 2 subspecies of Piping Plovers: Charadrius melodus melodus from the Eastern part of the continent and the mid-west population is known as Charadrius melodus circumcinctus. The bird's name is derived from its plaintive bell-like whistles. The total population is currently estimated at approximately 6,410 individuals. Piping Plovers migrate north in the summer months and spend the winter to the south on the Gulf of Mexico, the south-east coast of the United States and the Caribbean. They begin migrating north beginning in March. Their breeding grounds extend from southern Newfoundland to the northern parts of South Carolina.
The number of Piping Plovers has dropped dramatically since the early 1900's and concerted efforts are now underway to protect Piping Plover breeding habitat and minimize disturbance on beaches in North America. Learn more about the conservation of this tiny plover, along with Snowy Plovers and more on this week's show!

THE FLORIDA KEYS WITH WINGS!
Florida: The Keys and Dry Tortugas A WINGS Tour with Will Russell April 24 - May 1, 2010
Late April is a wonderful time to visit South Florida. Migrants augment the resident birds, and all of South Florida's special breeding birds have arrived. We'll visit the most interesting sites in peninsular South Florida, including Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge, Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, and Everglades National Park.
The Keys are at their best this time of year, too, and we'll explore for the sought-after Mangrove Cuckoo and other Keys specialties. We'll also take a day trip to the Dry Tortugas to appreciate Fort Jefferson the magnificent seabird colony. We'll conclude in the Miami area, where a wide selection of naturalized parrots can be seen. Add the chance at a vagrant from the Caribbean, and it's easy to see why South Florida with WINGS is such a popular destination. www.wingsbirds.com.
